What it feels like

A sharp, electric pain that travels from the lower back, through the buttock, and down one — or sometimes both — legs, occasionally all the way to the foot. You may also notice numbness, tingling, or a feeling of weakness in the affected leg(s). Some people describe a burning or crushing sensation along the nerve path, while others experience intermittent shooting pains that make standing or walking difficult.

Common triggers

  • Prolonged sitting, especially in soft chairs
  • Bending forward to lift
  • Sneezing or coughing (a sudden spike in pressure)
  • Long drives
  • Sitting on hard surfaces for extended periods

When to seek help urgently

Most sciatica settles within 6 weeks with conservative care. Speak to a spinal surgeon urgently if you experience:

  • Loss of bladder or bowel control
  • Saddle-area numbness (around the groin and inner thighs)
  • Rapidly worsening leg weakness
  • Pain that is severe and unremitting despite rest and analgesia

What to expect at consultation

Mr. Rath will take a thorough history, examine your back and legs, and review any existing imaging. Most consultations finish with a clear explanation of what's likely causing the pain and the realistic options — often non-surgical first. If imaging is needed, he will explain exactly what the scan is looking for and what the results mean for your treatment.
