Endoscopic lumbar discectomy
Endoscopic lumbar discectomy is a minimally invasive surgical procedure used to treat herniated or bulging disc in the lumbar spine (in the lower spine). It involves removing part of the disc that is pressing on nearby nerves, causing pain or other symptoms. Unlike traditional discectomy, which requires a larger incision and done under microscope, an endoscopic technique is performed using high-definition camera and precision instruments via a stab incision.
Here’s how we do it:
- Incision: A small stab incision less than a 1 cm is made under regional or general anaesthesia. This is performed under xray to helps guide us to affected part of the spine.
- Endoscope Insertion: The endoscope, which is a thin tube with a high-end camera and light, is inserted to view the disc and surrounding structures under constant fluid irrigation. It is similar to any knee and shoulder keyhole surgery.
- Disc Removal: Small precision instruments are inserted through the same incision to remove the disc fragments that are compressing nerves under vision. The nerve is protected throughout the procedure as it is performed under 4K high definition.
- Recovery: Since the procedure is minimally invasive, recovery is usually faster than traditional discectomy. Patients typically experience less pain and can often return to normal activities more quickly.
Benefits:
- Smaller incisions and less muscle damage resulting in less post-operative pain.
- Faster recovery times compared to traditional open surgery.
- Reduced risk of infection and scarring.
Risks:
- As with any surgery, there’s a risk of infection, nerve injury, or complications related to anesthesia.
- In some cases, the disc herniation may recur, though this is less common precaution should be taken during rehabilitation to reduce this risk.
The procedure is often recommended when conservative treatments like physical therapy, medications, or injections haven’t provided relief, and the disc herniation is causing significant pain, numbness, or weakness.
